About the Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration

On December 10, 1817, Mississippi was officially recognized as the 20th state in the United States of America.

Through regional bicentennial celebrations and coordinated local events, Mississippi will spend 2017 honoring our people and places, music and food, achievements in agriculture, science, and industry, sports legends, literary and artistic genius, and more. The capstone of the Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration will be the grand opening of the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

Join us on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as we celebrate 200 years of progress at the picturesque Centennial Plaza in Gulfport. This site was to be the location for our State’s 100th anniversary, but never occurred due to the start of World War I.  Today, 100 years later, we invite residents, visitors, schools, organizations and businesses to become a part of this once in a lifetime experience celebrating Mississippi – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
